Damian ‘Jr Gong’ Marley is the latest top artiste to sign on as co-owner of Jay Z’s music-streaming service, Tidal. The announcement was made at the Tidalx1020 concert at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, on Tuesday.

According to Forbes.com, the announcement was made just before Marley hit the stage for his first performance as co-owner of the international streaming service.

Marley joins a long list of celebrities as co-owners of Tidal. Other artistes who signed on as co-owners of Tidal in recent times include Alicia Keys, BeyoncÈ, Calvin Harris, Chris Martin of Coldplay, Daft Punk, J. Cole, Kanye West, Lil Wayne, Madonna, Nicki Minaj, Rihanna and Usher.

The announcement was met with positive energy from the local fraternity as well as members of the Marley family.

Rohan Marley, one of Jr Gong’s brothers, took to social media to share the news by reposting the link to the story on Forbes.com. His post was met with several congratulatory comments from social-media users.

Tidal has embraced the idea of musicians owning the service, which it stated from the beginning was one of the things that would separate it from the other streaming platforms. The company celebrated its relaunch just over six months ago, and since then, it has added new co-owners fairly regularly, grabbing from every genre and part of the world.

IMPRESSIVE LINE-UP
The Welcome to Jamrock singer was one of more than 20 well-known musicians that performed at the Tidal concert. The impressive artiste line-up included the likes of Jay Z, BeyoncÈ, Nicki Minaj, Lil Wayne and surprise guests like Nas and DJ Khaled. The show, apart from being a fundraiser, was also a celebration, as the streaming service can now claim one million paying subscribers, which is up a few hundred thousand from several months ago.

Marley is one of the most popular faces of reggae and has an impressive chart-topping career. In 2002, Marley won the Grammy Award for Best Reggae album for his project Halfway Tree, and then in 2005, his Welcome to Jamrock album was certified gold in the United States after selling 500,000 copies. The Welcome to Jamrock single was a success by itself, reaching No. 13 on the UK Singles Chart, and No. 55 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. It was also No. 100 on the Top 100 Songs of the Decade listing by Rolling Stone.
